WORKS ON CANVAS & METAL
In 1964, Hochman finished his graduate studies in ceramics in upstate New York and returned to New York City. He began a series of small geometric graphite drawings, which he showed to Frederic Mueller, a partner at Pace Gallery. Mueller advised Hochman to turn his drawings into larger works on canvas. In a deal sealed at Andy Warhol’s Factory, Mueller bought Hochman’s first painting and later exhibited others in a group show. Other prominent curators and collectors, including Henry Geldzahler, Sam Hunter, Robert Scull and Allan Stone, followed suit. This initial success catalyzed a lifelong exploration of materials and techniques, which characterizes Hochman’s work.
